I've wanted to go to the Petrified Forest National Park for quite some time, and my interest increased when I saw some Instagram photos. Seeing the large fallen trees, stumps, and even petrified wood shavings (fourth photo below), was even more curious than I thought. The logs all look like they've been cut, but apparently that's the way they break during the petrification process. Some logs looked like they were just fallen trees, but when you touch them or inspected closely you realize they are petrified. The colors in some were so striking. I couldn't help but wish for a coffee table made of one! ;-)
Gazing around, I wondered what this Park would look like if it hadn't been raided and abused by people prior to it becoming protected. The hikes that had the "forests" of petrified trees only hinted at what it could have been.
