Sand Island Campground

Stars: 2.5 out of 5

Lower rating due to lack of view, lack of amenities, uninteresting nearest town, and lack of hiking areas. Scored some points due to convenient location to many points of interest: Mesa Verde, Hovenweep, Natural Bridges, Monument Valley, and others.

Beware when you enter the campground, the area for RVs and trailers (longer than 20') is to the right, I think it is loop B. If you are in any RV that is hard to back up, do not go on the left/straight side (I believe it is loop A) because it is hard to back up, turn around, and you will not fit in any of these spots. We really feel the campground should specify this when you enter, because we almost went to the wrong loop and as new trailer drivers we would have been in quite a pickle. Luckily we parked at the split (where one loop goes one way and the other goes the other way) and scoped it out first.

Also, AllStays says that there are pull-throughs which is only sort of true. There are "pull to the side of the roads" but not really pull throughs. And I believe there is only 3 of these. All other sites are back ins.

The picture to the left of this text is of the petroglyphs that are at the campground. The campsite was so uninteresting for the most part that I didn't take any photos of it.
