STARS: 3 out of 5
PREWITT RESERVOIR SWA SOUTH BOONDOCKING: STERLING, COLORADO (ABOUT 1.5 HOURS FROM DENVER TO THE EAST): GPS 40.4161, -103.3825
Honestly, the only reason this gets as many as 3 stars is because the reservoir was a nice temperature for swimming and it was not too deep, but deep enough (when we were there). We swam every day, as did our dog Avery. The views from inside were spectacular, too. There is also a LOT of spots: 200, I believe it says on the sign. So plenty of room for everyone. There are dumpsters and drop toilets scattered about.
HOWEVER, the bugs (mosquitos, biting flies, a couple of kinds of other flies) were HORRIBLE, at least in our spot near the dock. There were more mosquitos in our spot than in many other spots, but the bug issue was still everywhere to some degree.
Also, some spots had major burr issues, which for a dog with long hair poses a real problem. Our spot didn't have burrs, but many spots did.
Also, the people who camp here leave trash everywhere, even though there are ample trash receptacles. We picked up trash on one of our walks and filled three big buckets and only dented the surface trash.
Also, it is extremely packed with people on weekends, mostly locals, which isn't a problem. It's just that it is so busy it is not at all private.
Would I camp here again? Certainly not in the summer (we were there mid-June), but maybe in September or October when the bugs and crowds are less abundant.
Verizon and ATT were both good. TV channels were minimal but did exist.
